Run game rules in spring finale

Plenty of questions remain about Iowa State football 2013 following the annual spring game Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium. But one thing seems pretty clear: the Cyclones have many, many options when it comes to running the football.
Twelve different ball carriers netted over 500 yards rushing on the day, as the Cardinal (mostly starters) defeated the Gold (mostly reserves), 35-27. But players flip-flopped sides so much that the team score - which has limited meaning to begin with - was even less significant. But offense definitely ruled the day in front of an estimated 8,000 ISU fans getting their last taste of Cyclone football until August.

DeVondrick Nealy led the way with the biggest rushing numbers for Iowa State. The sophomore gained 142 yards on 18 carries. Junior college transfer Aaron Wimberly picked up 87 yards on 15 carries and sophomore Rob Standard netted 70 yards on 11 carries. The Cyclone offense, running from multiple formations through the day including a heavy dose of the pistol, finished with 535 rushing yards.
The ISU offensive units got things done in the air as well, but to a lesser degree. Quarterbacks combined to complete 31-of-48 passes for 362 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. All tolled, the spring exhibition game resulted in 897 yards on 152 plays, a per play average of 5.9 yards.
Nealy had two rushing touchdowns, of 14 and 7 yards. Sophomore quarterback Sam Richardson ran the ball in for two scores as well with his TD plays covering 2 and 18 yards. Senior receiver Albert Gary had two touchdown receptions in the game, of 5 and 25 yards, catching one each from Richardson and redshirt freshman Grant Rohach.
Rohach had the biggest passing numbers of the game of quarterbacks. He completed 19-of-31 for 185 yards. Richardson completed 9-of-12 for 156 yards. Quenton Bundrage had 73 receiving yards on three receptions for the Cyclones. A trio of other receivers - Gary, Ben Boesen and Jeff Woody - also had three catches each.
Justin Coleman caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Richardson. Rohach rushed for a score and freshman walk-on running back Ben Goaley scored from a yard out as well. Edwin Arceo made a 53-yard field goal and Cole Netten hit from 29 yards.
Darian Cotton and Jeremiah George were each credited with 10 tackles for the Iowa State defense. Willie Scott and Charlie Rogers had interceptions and four players were credited with one sack each.
