ISU sank a season-high 13 treys in the game, the fourth time this season the Cyclones have made 10 or more 3-pointers in a game.
“It’s nice to see the players smile,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “It’s been a tough week. We did a lot of good things and we had a lot of people play well. We played fairly solid.”
Anne O’Neil, Lisa Kriener and Mary Fox had 13 points each for Iowa State to round out the double-digit scoring. Tracy Paustian came off the bench to add eight points and 10 rebounds for the Cyclones, her second
game with 10 or more boards this year.
Using four consecutive 3-pointers to open the game, Iowa State raced out to a 24-5 lead, allowing just two Texas Southern baskets in the first 11 minutes of the game. The Cyclones limited TSU to 27.3 percent
shooting in the first stanza and controlled the boards 29-14. ISU drained 46.9 percent from the floor and sank seven 3-pointers to give the Cyclones a 39-24 lead at the half.
Iowa State dominated the backboards 57-34 and shot 49.2 percent from the floor overall, including a 51.7 percent second-half effort. The Cyclones still struggled to control the ball with 22 turnovers, many of
them unforced. Every Iowa State player saw action in the game, with no one playing more than 27 minutes. Ten Cyclones registered in the scoring column, while 11 of the 12 players pulled down at least one rebound.
Texas Southern’s Jennifer Hickmon had 18 points to lead all scorers. The Tigers shot 27.4 percent in the game, including a 7-of-31 performance from behind the arc.
