UVa transfer pledges to Cyclones

Iowa State has added a player for its 2018-19 basketball campaign in Virginia transfer Marial Shayok.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Shayok - a native of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - notified the Cyclone coaching staff of his decision on Wednesday, according to a source associated with the former UVa player.

Shayok has played three seasons in Charlottesville, meaning he will have one season of eligibility remaining in Ames after he sits out the 2017-18 season.

ISU fans might remember Shayok from a couple of years back when he played 22 minutes in the Cavaliers' NCAA tournament Sweet 16 win over Iowa State. Shayok scored five points and grabbed five rebounds in that game.

Shayok played in all 34 of Virginia's games this past season, starting in 14 of them. He averaged nearly nine points per game while shooting 44.5 percent from the field overall and 32.8 percent from three-point range. He averaged around 2 1/2 rebounds per contest and shot nearly 80 percent from the free throw line.

Shayok visited Iowa State earlier this month after announcing his decision to leave UVa in March.
