Long snapper commits to Cyclones

It was obviously a Big Monday for the Iowa State basketball program as Steve Prohm’s club knocked off the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners at Hilton Coliseum.

But while the basketball Cyclones were doing work, Matt Campbell’s football staff was in the process of gaining three commitments, the latest of which came shortly before midnight when a Chicagoland high school senior gave the coaches the news.

Long snapper Steven Wirtel had official visits planned for Illinois and Georgia the next two weekends, but neither of those programs had offered a full ride scholarship up front as the Cyclones had. Illinois had presented him with a grayshirt offer and Georgia said it would award him a scholarship if he won the long snapper job out of training camp.

The 6-foot-4, 207-pound Wirtel said that weighed heavily on his mind, as did the experience he had over the weekend on his official visit.

For more on Wirtel’s commitment to the Cyclones, check out a more-detailed story on the ISU Confidential message board.
