I-State commits reach out to offered 2021 Ohio linebacker

After becoming the first Power-5 offer for a 2021 Ohio linebacker, Iowa State has remained in steady contact and hopes to get a visit from the recruit over the summer.

Chardon junior Myles Mendeszoon said his interest from the Cyclones picked up steadily during March and has continued in the weeks that have followed.

“About five weeks ago, they called my head coach and asked about me, which was pretty cool,” said Mendeszoon. “I sent them an email with my film and transcripts, then they followed up with my head coach and me. I had a couple phone calls with them and after that they offered me a scholarship. I’m hearing from all of the coaches.

“They’re really a family over there, so all of them are involved in the process. They’re all from Ohio and football is pretty big out there. A lot of the coaches went to Mount Union, which is a very successful program. Talking to them, they’re really nice people and are treating me like family already.”

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound prospect, who recorded 16.5 tackles-for-loss and eight sacks as a junior, said members of the staff in Ames like a number of facets in his game.

“They really like my desire to play hard, my explosiveness, relentlessness, length that I have and how I’m physical with my hands,” Mendeszoon said. “They want me to play linebacker in a similar role that I’m playing right now, either as a SAM or WILL.”

Although he didn’t have the opportunity to visit during spring practice, Mendeszoon said he has gained a better understanding of I-State online.

“Their program is on the come-up and you can see how they’re building throughout the years since Coach (Matt) Campbell got there,” he said. “They were ranked last year and made it to another bowl game. They’re progressing really well.

“I’ve been able to take a virtual tour and it’s been cool getting to see the campus. I’ve loved seeing the facilities. They’re extremely nice. I saw each part of the campus and they broke down each part of it. The new academic facility that will be a part of the football building looks really nice and it’s really going to help the academics.”

Mendeszoon and fellow ISU defensive recruit Carston Marshall have also discussed their mutual offers.

“I’ve talked to one of the other linebackers they’re recruiting from Ohio,” Mendeszoon said. “Coach (Tyson) Veidt introduced me to him. He lives about an hour away from me. We’ve texted and caught up with each other. He’s more of a strong safety and I’m more of an outside linebacker or defensive end.

“I’m also hearing from everyone that’s already committed. They’re telling me about what they like about Iowa State, since they’ve already been on multiple visits. I definitely want to go down there and visit campus. No one knows when it’s going to open back up from the pandemic. Whenever it opens back up, I’m definitely going to visit.”
