Florida DB goes public with Iowa State commitment

The comfort level of being around other players, and even a coach, from his area was enough to sell a Florida high school recruit on Iowa State.

West Palm Beach Oxbridge Academy senior safety V’Lique Carter announced his decision via social media earlier today, although he said commitment had been in the works for a while.

“I visited Iowa State and it was a pretty nice fit,” said Carter, who was in Ames the weekend of October 13th. “I’ve already got one of my former little league teammates, Datrone Young, who is a freshman up there. He and O.J. Tucker were my hosts when I was there. There’s also a Florida coach up there, (Marc Thurston), who is from the Broward area. It’s a beautiful place and friendly town. I just liked it a lot.

“I’ll be like a safety/cornerback. We’re some of the best players on the field, I believe. I’m just going to do my thing.”

Although he took an official visit to Colorado this past weekend, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound Carter said it was a formality that he announced he’d be a Cyclone.

“I’ve been committed for a couple weeks, but just never posted it,” Carter said. “I wanted to wait and announce it on the same day as one of my former teammates. I’m excited and my mom is excited. There’s a lot of energy and good vibes.”

The 17th known verbal for head coach Matt Campbell’s 2018 class, Carter, who said his final decision was between the Cyclones and Colorado, believes it’s an exciting time to join a program on the rise.

“I’m just looking forward to going up there and playing my game,” he said. “I’ve talked to Coach Campbell a couple times and trust his process and trust his game. He’s got a great coaching staff and they’ve been together for many years. I’m putting my trust in them.”

Carter said he is planning to sign with I-State in the early signing period next month.
