Cinci RB Montgomery chooses ISU

Cincinnati (Ohio) Mount Healthy running back David Montgomery, the Ohio Division III player of the year, announced his commitment to Iowa State Wednesday morning and then signed with the Cyclones.

Montgomery took his recruitment down to the final hours before officially going public with his plans to become a member of ISU’s crop of newcomers. But Montgomery had been silently committed to ISU for several days.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder also had a Power-5 offer from Illinois to go with FBS offers from Ball State, Buffalo and Marshall.

“My mom liked it and I liked it,” said Montgomery following his official visit to Iowa State the weekend of January 22nd. “The academics were very good, how they have a mentor and a personal tutor that can help you. You can get help when you need it. The facilities are nice as well and they were all welcoming. I could actually see myself playing there, so it was a very good time at a great university.”

The two-star recruit will join Texas prep Kene Nwangwu as running back signings in the Cyclones’ 2016 class. Montgomery, who actually played quarterback for his school this past season, rushed for 2,707 yards and 41 touchdowns and threw for 726 yards and seven touchdowns.

During his official visit to Ames, Montgomery was paired up with ISU’s leading rusher from 2015 Mike Warren, who seemed to be the critical piece to getting him to join the program.

“He showed that it would be a great fit for me and told me that if I come in that he and I could play together,” Montgomery said. “It was pretty cool that he was ready to make room for me, even though he’s been the man and is a star. He wants to give me an opportunity to come play with him and was very accepting. He wants the whole team to be better and not just him. He’s very unselfish.”

Montgomery also took official visits to Marshall on January 15th and Illinois this past weekend.
