Cyclones whip OU

A quick turnaround and road trip was sure to be tough on Oklahoma. And Iowa State's red-hot shooting in the first half was pretty tough on the Sooners as well Monday night at Hilton Coliseum as ISU rolled to an 83-64 victory in Big 12 play.

The Cyclones led by as many points as 25 points in the second half en route to their 20th straight victory at home and third in a row over OU. Iowa State is, for the time being, in sole possession of third place in the Big 12 standings with a 6-3 conference record.

ISU plays at Kansas State on Saturday evening. The Cyclones beat the Wildcats 73-67 in the teams' first meeting just last Saturday (Jan. 26) in Ames.

Both Iowa State and Oklahoma had a tough challenge coming back from Saturday afternoon games to play again on Monday evening. But OU's task was obviously tougher with travel, not to mention the disappointment of a two-point home loss to Kansas State on Saturday. Conversely, ISU was playing at home again after beating Baylor in Ames on Saturday.

Both teams started fast offensively but only Iowa State could sustain it. The Cyclones made their first four three-point field goal attempts and led 20-13 when the first media timeout finally came around at the 13:24 mark. ISU's first double-digit lead came on a Chris Babb three-point field goal with 8:11 to go in the half that made it 31-20.

Will Clyburn scored six straight points at the rim on two lay-ups and a dunk to stretch Iowa State's lead to 14 points at 39-25 with 4:13 left to play before halftime. The Cyclones had a couple of 15-point leads late in the half before taking a 44-31 edge to the locker room at halftime.

Any doubt about the outcome of the game was erased in the decisive opening minutes of the second half. Iowa State went on a 14-2 run to start the second half, including seven straight points by Melvin Ejim. ISU led by 20 at 53-33 with 15:56 left in the game and the advantage swelled to 25 at 58-33 on a Clyburn jumper at the 14:39 mark. The Cyclones led by 25 points in three occasions in the second half.

Clyburn was Iowa State's leading scorer with 19 points. Ejim and Babb scored 12 each and Tyrus McGee had 11. The Cyclones made 50 percent of their threes in the first half (8-16) and ended the game hitting 11-of-27 treys. ISU was great at the free throw line, making 16-of-18.
