New state champ Costello eager to enroll at MSU

Michigan State-bound power forward Matt Costello has grown to appreciate the buffer provided by his involvement in track, which is situated on the calendar between the high school basketball season at Bay City Western and what had been the grind of travel basketball each of past four summers.

"Track has always been kind of liking hanging out with friends for me," said Costello, who signed with Michigan State as No. 21 power forward and No. 83 overall player in the Class of 2012 according to Rivals.com. "It is something fun to do where nobody expects you to do anything spectacular."

Spectacular is an accurate description of Costello's four years on the basketball court at Bay City Western.

Named the 2012 Hal Schram Michigan Mr. Basketball Award recipient after averaging 25.1 points and 19.1 rebounds per game as a senior, Costello exits high school as the Warriors' career leader in points (1,520), rebounds (1,069), and blocked shots (280).

Spectacular is also an accurate description of Costello's performance in the Division 1 final at East Kentwood on June 2 whereat the future Spartan captured his high school's first-ever state track championship with a throw of 178-6 in discus.

"One of my goals going into the season was to win a state championship," said Costello. "I did not know at the beginning of the season whether it was an attainable goal, but it ended up working out that way. I am pleased that I was able to take of the opportunity."
