Robert Goff looks forward to Kruger
When Joe Castiglione released men's basketball head coach Jeff Capel from his contract the outlook of the Sooner basketball program had become quite bleak.
Only one recruit signed to join a basketball program that had once been a part of the NCAA tournament discussion year in and year out. A call for new leadership on the hardwood for the Sooner basketball program almost became a must.
Castiglione made the call.
And didn't take no for answer.
Now with Lon Kruger in place in what could be called 'a late second half comeback' the Sooners new head man will now have the task of becoming familiar with the back roads of the Midwest recruiting trail.
But to make things easier for the new head coach, no additional persuasion will be needed for his lone commitment in Hutchinson (KS) C.C. power forward Robert Goff
"I talked to coach Lon Kruger just the other day. He talked to me real brief before I headed into the gym. I expect to get back in contact with him sometime today (Tuesday)," said Goff
"He seems like a good coach. I have a good feeling about him. I don't know much about him but I know about his experience and stuff. I can't wait to get down there and see what he's all about."
Despite signing with Oklahoma last September when Capel still roamed the Sooners bench. The six-foot-nine, 240 pound JUCO believes he will fit right in with Kruger's 'run-and-gun' system.
"I was down about Coach (Jeff) Capel leaving and I didn't think he was given a fair chance. I talked to him a couple times since he's been fired and he said he's doing well and just waiting to get hired for a new job."
"Our season wasn't the season I expected either last season. I just feel I can bring a lot of defense and a lot of offense to Oklahoma. My game is running the floor so yeah (laughing) I think Coach Kruger and I will fit in real well together"
However, within the last few weeks and months questions surrounding Goff's academic qualifications came to the forefront.
"No sir. Everything is still a full go and I'm 100 percent in. I hope to get to Norman by early June."
Now with one recruit on board Kruger will hit the road as he and his assistant coaches Lew Hill and Steve Henson begin to hit the recruiting trail for the first time under the direction of their new program.
