May 7, 2012Good start for Johnson in Tampa Bay
Undrafted free agent Leonard Johnson from Iowa State is off to a good start in rookie mini-camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Tampa Bay Times reported that Johnson was grouped with the Bucs' draft picks - and not other free agents - during the three-day mini-camp that ended Sunday. Johnson is a native of the Tampa area and new Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano was very familiar with Johnson after watching all 12 ISU games last year to prepare for the Pinstripe Bowl. Schiano was the head coach at Rutgers.
Johnson matched up with Rutgers' top receiver, Mohamed Sanu, through much of the bowl game. Sanu had six receptions for 62 yards in the Knights' 27-13 win over the Cyclones.
Lockett chooses Marquette over ISU
Former Arizona State wing Trent Lockett will transfer to Marquette. Lockett made his decision on Saturday and announced it via Twitter.
Iowa State had been the other finalist for Lockett, a Twin Cities native who is transferring to be closer to his ill mother. Lockett averaged 13 points per game for ASU last season, shooting over 40 percent from three-point range and nearly 50 percent from the field overall.
Softball swept by no. 25 Baylor
Iowa State was outscored a combined 20-1 in a three-game sweep at the hands of no. 25 Baylor over the weekend.
The losses drop ISU to 14-36 overall and 2-18 in Big 12 play. The Cyclones finish the season at home this coming weekend with a series against Oklahoma.
Pratt earns his Iowa State degree
Kenny Pratt, a two-year standout for Iowa State basketball in the 1990s, graduated from ISU over the weekend. Pratt had promised his mother that he would finish his college degree and his persistence netted him an Iowa State diploma.
Pratt currently works for the James "Major" Adams Youth & Family Development Academy in Chicago, a center for underprivileged children. He's also an AAU basketball coach.
