February 11, 2012A 28-5 run by Iowa State in the middle part of the game provided the cushion in a 69-46 victory over Texas A&M Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. Chris Allen tallied a career-high 25 points to lead the Cyclones (18-7 overall, 8-4 Big 12).
The Cyclones ended the first half on a 10-2 run and began the second stanza on an 18-3 run. Royce White did his magic again while attempting just five shots, grabbing 10 rebounds and handing out seven assists.
Iowa State is now tied for third in the Big 12 standings (8-4), two games ahead of Kansas State and Texas at 6-6. The win completes a season sweep over the Aggies (12-12 overall, 3-9 Big 12), the first sweep over a league opponent for the Cyclones since beating Nebraska twice in 2010.
Both teams struggled to score in the early going. Iowa State held a 20-17 lead with 5:46 left in the first until ending the half on a 10-2 run. Chris Allen scored the final five points of the half, drilling a 3-pointer thanks to a behind-the-back pass from Royce White and then scoring on a drive to the hoop to give Iowa State a 30-19 halftime lead.
Allen had 10 points at the break. The 19 points scored by the Aggies was an opponent-season low and the first time Iowa State held a league foe to under 20 since Kansas State had 19 points on Feb. 22, 2009.
An 18-3 run by the Cyclones to open the second half put the game out of reach. Allen had six points in the run, as the Cyclones led 48-22 until Khris Middleton hit a 3-pointer for the Aggies with 11:24 left in the game.
Iowa State's largest lead was 33 points after Percy Gibson got a hook shot to go in the lane to make it 67-34 Cyclones with 3:50 to go.
Iowa State outrebounded A&M, 38-22. David Loubeau led the Aggies with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting and a team-high six rebounds.
Iowa State travels to Baylor on Monday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CST on ESPNU.
