Wrap Up: Tech vs. UC-Riverside
Martin Zeno led the Raiders with 19 points and four assists in 36 minutes of play as Texas Tech opened the 2007-08 basketball season with a win against the Highlanders of UC-Riverside. Alan Voskuil knocked in 12 points and had four steals, while Damir Suljagic led Tech with eight rebounds and also had four steals in the 12-point victory.
Player of the Game
Martin Zeno. Damir Suljagic, and Alan Voskuil all played pretty solid games. Zeno led the team with 19 points and four assists. Suljagic played 35 minutes of gritty basketball and led the team in rebounds with eight and along with Voskuil had four steals. Voskuil scored a dozen points and hustled everywhere.
Trevor Cook is worthy of some metion here. He scored nine points in 16 mintues and showed a lot of good movement on the offensive end. He also pulled down five rebounds in his abbreviated time. John Roberson also played a pretty good game and was particularly effective defensively against the UC-Riverside guards.
It's very pleasing to see the junior Suljagic play a solid game. His speed up and down the court is apparent and he is strong. He wasn't much of a scoring threat and may not be all season, but his defense was good overall and really good at times. He had four steals, two assists, and six points in his 35 minutes.
I thought the Raiders did a really good job of taking away opportunities for the Highlanders to score. Tech forced 27 turnovers and much of that was due to being in a good defensive position not only on the ball but on the players identified to receive the would-be pass.
