Costello steals spotlight at Holiday Hoops
LANSING - Michigan State-bound senior Matt Costello scored 34 points, pulled down 28 rebounds, blocked seven shots and added five assists against No. 8 ranked Martin Luther King in the Meijer Holiday Hoops Invitational at Lansing Eastern Thursday night.
And while Costello and his Bay City Western teammates found themselves on the short side of a 73-72 overtime thriller, they walked off the court at the Don Johnson Fieldouse feeling good about the way the competed and the direction their team is headed during what was expected to be a rebuilding year for the Warriors.
"I have to credit my team because they played awesome the whole night long," said Costello. "I was a little bit scared because Detroit (MLK) has great pressure and our guard are young and small and they are not used to going against this. They played awesome tonight, I was so proud of them."
Costello's lone regret after the game was that he was unable to convert two scoring opportunities in the final six seconds that could have given his team a statement victory over King.
"I wish that I could have made that shot and won the game, I had two chances and I screwed them up," he said. "I played well, I am just disappointed with the way I finished."
