Hughes Says Sometimes It's Best to be Lucky
Klein (Texas) Oak defensive end Nathan Hughes may stand above his peers at 6-foot-6, and roughly 260-pounds but that's not to say he is all that different from his smaller classmates. The talented pass-rusher, like many of his peers, talked about a moment in which he knew the school he'd someday commit to was the right program for him.
After they've made their commitment public, generally one recruit after another talks about the moment in which they knew where they would be playing college football. For Hughes the moment came early even if the decision took some time to work itself out.
However, there was also one important issue that had to be addressed before he'd allow himself to fall in love with Oklahoma and eventually commit to the Sooners on Saturday.
"That moment came when I left their (first) junior day, I loved it. But my mom hadn't seen it yet, and I want my mom to be happy about where I go. I wanted here to see it before I got too happy about it," Hughes explained. "I didn't want to fall in love with it until I knew she approved.
"She went up there the same time Max and I went up, that's when I knew that this is definitely where I want to go.
"After my mom told me it was a place she liked, from there it was good. She likes every college she has seen but she liked OU more than any other college and I was praying she said it and she did, and that made everything fall into place and I was ready to make my choice."
